Proposal Writing is the ideal Workplace Education program if you write proposals and/or respond to RFPs as a part of your role. By learning
about the standard components of proposals, how to format a proposal, how to create graphs and budgets, and evaluate the effectiveness of
your writing, you’ll be positioned to craft proposals that get results. You’ll also learn about ethical persuasion, reader-centred writing, the role of effective evidence, and how to overcome any barriers you may have with your writing.

This program is intended to provide you with the knowledge and understanding of how to create strong and persuasive proposals, along with the skills to do so. At the end of the program, you will

  • be able to identify the different kinds of proposals and the various sources of Requests for Proposals
  • understand how to structure an effective proposal and assemble persuasive evidence
  • learn and practice ways to overcome barriers to writing
  • explore and practice the persuasive power of plain language
  • be able to identify and apply universal principles of ethical persuasion
  • practice how to edit your own writing to make it clear and polished
  • learn and practice how to give and receive feedback in a way that is both useful and considerate
  • learn ways to make your spoken presentations more powerful

Learning how to write a clear, effective proposal can open doors. It can help you

  • land a contract
  • access government funding
  • get investment in your business or non-profit
  • win you a place on a "preferred supplier" list
  • and much more

Standard Topics will include:
• Types of proposals
• Sources of RFPs
• Standard components of proposals
• Common sector-specific components of proposals
• Formatting a proposal
• Six aspects of effective evidence and their role in proposal writing
• Plain language (including literacy issues)
• Knowing your audience
• Principles of persuasion in writing
• Reader-centred vs. writer-centred writing
• Overcoming barriers to writing
• Self-editing
• Creating and presenting through the proposal budget
• RFP evaluation criteria
• Graphics for proposals

Start date: Wednesday, April 16, 2025

Time: 9:00am - 1:00pm (please note different timing)

Classes will occur every Wednesday for 10 weeks.  There are additional requirements for the Zoom online programs, as follows: The program must be taken on a computer, laptop, or tablet; phones will not be an accepted device. Participants must have a high speed Internet connection (no dial up), and hardwired is preferred to wi-fi. A headset or earbuds must be used, and the participant must have a webcam, if no camera in their laptop, with the camera left on; video participation is a requirement, to ensure the connection to the instructor and other participants. A quiet place to focus is required, free from distractions. These details will be part of the INA process.

Registration is not confirmation of acceptance in the program; you will be contacted as to your status after an individual needs assessment, and no later than April 11, 2025.

TESTIMONIALS

“Leading my first-ever CBDC-NOBL course, I can’t say enough about Lynn MacKinnon! She is an incredible instructor, and wow, does she know her stuff! I’ve learned more in five weeks than I did in all of my years in university, having taken multiple accounting and finance courses throughout. Lynn uses language and terms we can all understand, as well as practical, real-life examples to take us through the information we need to know for small business accounting; all of which I have already used. Lynn is hands-down the best instructor I’ve had to date, and I can only hope I have the great fortune of partaking in another course, led by her, in future. Thank you Lynn!” Tanya Colburne, Partner, Langille & Colburne – More Than Events
